The questions that reach a tax desk rarely arrive one at a time. A client emails: "We're moving the company from Delaware to Texas mid-year, hiring remote employees in three states, and switching from LLC to S corp: what changes for federal and state taxes, payroll withholding, and our estimated payments?" That is one email and a stack of research projects: the election and its timing, the entity classification consequences, nexus in each new state, withholding obligations, estimated payment mechanics, and whatever the destination state layers on top. Deep Research, new in the AI Tax Assistant, is built for exactly that shape of question, including the scenario-building kind, where you put several scenarios in one question ("what happens if we structure it this way versus that way?") and each branch becomes its own research thread.
One question, several research projects
Standard chat mode is built for focused questions: one issue, one retrieval pass, one cited answer. Ask it a six-part question and every part competes for the same pass. Deep Research works the way a careful researcher would: it first plans the research, splitting your question into the focused sub-questions inside it, then researches each area separately against our library of U.S. federal and all-50-states tax law, and finally writes one combined answer, with citations to official sources throughout, same as every answer on the platform.
You watch it work
A deep turn is doing more, so it takes longer, and instead of a spinner, the assistant narrates the pipeline while it runs: planning research across the areas it found in your question, searching the knowledge base, ranking sources, generating the answer. You can see what the extra time is buying before the first paragraph arrives.
No length limit
Standard mode has a length cap, because very long questions deserve the deeper treatment. Paste one in and the assistant says so and offers to switch modes with one tap, resending the same question under Deep Research. Deep Research itself has no such cap: bring the whole fact pattern, in whatever length it actually has.
One toggle in the assistant
Deep Research is a toggle in the AI Tax Assistant's composer, next to web search. Turn it on for the question in front of you, and it stays on until you turn it off. It's live in the assistant now. Ask the whole question; verify every source.
